Instructions for Submission of Talks
All submissions for talks must be made electronically through the online submission system EasyChair at https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=qip2018.
Contributed talks at QIP are intended to be representative of outstanding recent research contributions to the theory of quantum information and computation. The introduction of each submission should contain a nontechnical, clear and insightful description of the results and main ideas, their potential impact and their importance to quantum information and computation. Submissions should also include all of the ideas necessary for an expert to fully verify the central claims in the paper. Authors are encouraged to put the references at the very end of the submission.
Unlike past years, we do not require a separate extended abstract. Still, the program committee is expected to read the first 3 pages of each paper carefully and will read further only as necessary, so these introductory pages should clearly justify accepting the paper.
FAQ about new format
• How does the new format compare with the previous QIP extended abstracts?
Like the previous extended abstracts, your introduction should be accessible to a typical QIP attendee/PC member, and should convince the reader of the significance of the work. However, your introduction does not need to contain compressed versions of your proofs, and you should prioritize readability over completeness.
• How does the new format compare with the typical introduction of a paper?
Your introduction does not need to explain high-level background (such as why quantum information is a worthwhile field) but should include things that a PC will find helpful, such as clear comparisons with other closely related works. It should be longer than a PRL intro, and comparable or shorter than a STOC/FOCS intro.
• Can I still include an extended abstract if I want?
Yes. For example, your submission may be based on several papers, or one very long paper, or an existing paper with a long introduction that you don’t want the PC to focus on. In this case, you may want to write a few pages at the start which gives the high-level overview that the PC will need. If you want these first few pages to have the look and feel of a separate extended abstract, that is fine.
• How can I get the PC to read the technical details of my paper and not only the introduction?
In the introduction explain which technical advances are important contributions, summarize them, justify their importance, and give pointers to the body of the paper for details.
Anonymous Submissions
A new option this year is to submit papers anonymously. To do this, simply create an easychair account under a pseudonym and avoid putting identifiable information in your submission. You will want to use a new email address which forwards to your normal email. PC members are instructed to respect the spirit of this anonymity and not to attempt to find out the authors’ identities. Since PC members may not be able to declare conflict of interest (COI), authors of anonymous submissions should email the PC chair listing any PC members who are likely to have COI despite the authors’ anonymity, and explaining the reason for the COI.
Best Student Paper Prize
A submission is eligible for the student prize if and only if the main author(s) is/are a student(s) at the time of the submission and will present the work at QIP, and further a significant portion of the work (at least 60%) must have been done by said student(s), including the majority of the key ideas. Eligibility can only be indicated at the time of submission. All authors are notified if their paper has been labelled as eligible for the student prize, and have 14 days following submission to voice any disagreements about the paper’s nomination to the PC chair. The PC chair is free to ask for any clarifications regarding the students’ contributions at any time.
Instructions for Submissions of Poster Presentations
Poster submissions use the same link as talk submissions: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=qip2018 .
When you start a new submission you will need to choose between the “talk” and “poster-only” tracks. The “talk” track includes the option to be considered only for a talk or for both a talk and a poster. Talk-only and talk-or-poster submissions will be treated identically when talks are chosen. Most posters will be accepted unless they are off-topic or clearly wrong.
EasyChair Instructions
Go to easychair.org and in the upper-right corner, click on “signup” (if you have not used easychair before) or “login” (if you have). Click on “New Submission” and follow the instructions. Please check the group box for Best Student Paper Prize only if all co-authors of this submission are aware of the eligibility criteria of the prize and actually support the choice. You may update or withdraw submissions up until the deadline, and only the latest version will be reviewed.
Your submission will consist of a title, abstract (that will go online for accepted talks) and a paper which should be in pdf form. If you want to want to submit multiple papers they should be merged into a single file. In latex this can be done with the \includepdf[pages=-]{filename.pdf} command.
